Temple University Health System

More Open Communication, Deeper Engagement

NEW INTERNAL COMMS TEAM ACTIVATED OVERNIGHT

Based on feedback from employees, Temple University Health System understood its workforce was burnt-out, disengaged and lacked visibility into organizational accomplishments. RTRN comms experts joined the health system’s communications team to accelerate employee engagement and strategic internal communications. Adding in complexity for communications related to unions and contracts, Temple University Health System and RTRN worked hand-in-hand to increase employee pride and recognition to grow confidence in leadership, with an added focus on nurses.

OUR
EXPERTISE
CREATED A
POWERFUL
PARTNERSHIP

Temple University Health System needed expertise to address concerns now, not six months from now. RTRN experts brought decades of healthcare experience immediately to the table and leveraged it to evaluate communication practices, gather insights from employees on preferred methods to receive communications and what tools they found as most helpful. Once armed with internal insights, RTRN developed a 10-month internal communications strategy, in collaboration with corporate communications, to produce content that resonated with employees in feeling valued, accomplished, successful, understood, and heard.

“The support and guidance provided by RTRN was a game changer. They provided the foundation for a very strong communication plan. The team was outstanding to work with and I would work with them again in a heartbeat. “

TEMPLE HEALTH STRONG
APPROACH

To gain traction against the outlined goals, Temple Health System needed a “strong” and consistent theme on which to focus communications and messaging campaigns – one that emphasized their people’s dedication to show up strong for patients and each other. The “Temple Health Strong” strategy encompassed key nursing issues, gave leaders tools to communicate more effectively, reduced ad hoc emails, and integrated powerful storytelling into each touch point message. A dedicated bi-weekly Chief Nursing Executive message was created and distributed to all nurses to reinforce the health system’s proactive, ongoing work to combat burn-out, disengagement and turnover. The CNE messages and supporting nurse leader communications helped establish more open communication and bridge gaps and assumptions between frontline nurses and leaders.

In addition, a new system-wide bi-weekly eNews Digest was created to curate top stories, impactful people profiles, important organizational updates, and newsworthy accomplishments from across the system

REENGAGED &
TRULY, DEEPLY APPRECIATED

After more than two years on the frontlines of a global pandemic, Temple University Health System employees were exhausted. By incorporating an internal communications strategy that focused on creating spaces for feedback, highlighting accomplishments, spreading cohesive messaging and simply saying, “Thank you,” engagement and appreciation increased. Throughout the 10-month strategy, communications maximized events and messages of gratitude during National Nurses & Hospital Week. Additionally, an eight-week movie-themed campaign, using imaginative digital and physical assets, acknowledged the hard work and accomplishments of the Temple Health team and created fun opportunities for staff to engage with powerful content. More than 4,000 employees, almost half the workforce, visited the campaign site to enter raffles and participate each week.
